Bringing clients in against the odds Dear JOY! I don’t know if you have a magic wand to grant my wish but you say you are the wish granter. Well I recently moved here to work as an OPC, but I need more tours, can you help me get more couples in? I see this job as a really good opportunity for a better life, I’m not ripping anybody off. There are too many of us is the problem. signed: Alex There are an overwhelming number of OPCs in Vallarta. Set yourself apart with your own unique flair. How you present yourself, and how you connect with people, is the key to bringing more couples in. In any job, you must first sell yourself. No-one will go to a presentation offered by someone they don’t like and trust. You have 15 seconds to make a first impression – good, bad or otherwise, the first 15 seconds of meeting someone is when you are assessed, and the person decides if they are going to stop or not. Be attractive – which is more about the vibe you give off than how you look. Be interesting enough that people are willing to pause on their way to wherever, and spend some of their valuable holiday time with you. For heaven’s sake get some new lines. When you hear; “Are you a movie star?” 10 times in a day you do more than cease to pay attention, you start to roll your eyes at whoever is saying it. Put yourself in the tourist’s shoes, they encounter the same lines from anxious OPCs determined to reel them in EVERY FEW METERS in some parts of town! The only way to compete against those kinds of odds is by shining so bright that you cease to be just another OPC interruption, and begin to be someone that people consider a delightful addition to their day. My favourite OPC manager was Jo, I would go out of my way to walk past her booth, and I wasn’t the only one. She always had something interesting to share, was extremely well read, funny and kind. If she said she was going to do something, it would be done. “How do you handle being an OPC with people rejecting you all day long?” I once asked her. She grinned “I LOVE being an OPC, it’s the only job in the world that forces me to be positive and upbeat! I have no choice but to focus on how good I choose to feel and how good I can make other people feel, that’s how I get my tours.” She was, of course, immensely successful at her job, she worked at being so. Every day she fed herself with positive books and affirmations, tried new approaches, and looked for more ways to help people, some of which included sending them to presentations. Jo made more than money, she made friends, and she made a difference in the lives that she touched. Imagine a leaf from Jo’s book shooting out of my magic wand and landing in your hand Alex :-} This is the first step to having your wish granted.
