I'm scared I have cancer I read your column, I am scared I have cancer like Louise Hay did, my periods are really bad, I just want to hide in bed I feel so bad. I am too scared to go to the doctor in case I do, I don’t like doctors. Is there a emotional reason for bad periods that isn’t cancer? signed: Maria I know how scary doctors can be, if you don’t have the right one. But not all doctors are scary. What if you go to a doctor and he tells you that you don’t have cancer? You will have spent all this time worrying for nothing! And even if you do ‘have cancer like Louise Hay did’, remember that she cured herself completely and went on to help millions of others do the same. Your body is asking you for help, that help may or may not include traditional medicine, you won’t know until you find out what’s wrong so you can take appropriate action. Treating the physical symptom is just as important as treating the emotional cause, you can’t do one and not the other, they need to be done together to effect complete healing, and there are many ways to do both. A visit to the doctor is a good thing to do to put your mind at ease. The stress of wondering what is wrong is as bad for you as anything else, you don’t need to torture yourself like that when you can find out and take measures to fix it. If the doctor doesn’t know, there are other ways to find out what your body needs. Louise Hay has this to say about the emotional cause of menstrual problems: “Rejection of one’s femininity. Guilt, fear, belief that the genitals are sinful or dirty.” The affirmations she suggests is: “I accept my full power as a woman and accept all of my bodily processes as normal and natural. I love and approve of myself.” It’s a powerful affirmation and it touches on the core of what I have found to be a common thread with the clients I have who come for help with their periods. As women have lost touch with power we have as creative beings. Most of us have been raised to think of menstruation as a curse to be suffered through each month. We are ashamed or embarrassed to be bleeding in this way. We try to ignore it and carry on business as usual. ‘Use a tampon, take a pill, it needn’t interfere with your life.’ But menstruation is a big part of our lives that we ignore at our peril. I invite you to consider another perspective; one that honours the huge power that comes through your body when it cleanses itself monthly to recreate itself anew. Consider the miracle of the only blood that is shed without a wound. Your body is inviting you to go inward at your time of menstruation. To hold a loving space to help it release that which no longer serves you and prepare your body for new life. That’s one reason you feel like hibernating at this time.To the largest degree possible listen to your body and do what it asks. Right now it’s asking you to find out what the problem is so you can start to address it. Call the doctor Maria, get that out of the way and off your mind, you can decide which healing methods are right for you after you get the test results.
